Glendale Riverwalk Master Plan

Urban Design Concepts
Dense, Mixed-Use and Walkable Urban Development The vision is to create a truly mixed-use, high density entertainment district that combines office, hotel, dining, and retail together in a high density, mixed use, walkable urban center. The street and open space network will facilitate connections with the existing Cherry Creek waterway and the new riverwalk.

The Riverwalk
The Riverwalk is an urban channel and organizing element which reinforces the east-west connectivity of the development. This channel will be animated with boats and various features which celebrate water and the linear urban character of the adjacent buildings. The channel will be shallow allowing the edges to be without railings. Periodic bridging with adequate clearance for boats will be necessary to allow cross movement.

Main Street
Ground floor pedestrian-active uses line the street, with residential, hotel and/or office space above the ground floor uses. The street is designed to support sidewalk cafes, and encourage night-time entertainment and dining activities. Garage access and curb cuts off these main streets are limited (but allowed) to minimize pedestrian / vehicular conflicts.

Broadcasting Rugby, the Riverwalk and Colorado

Admittedly, this is an unusal component of the Glendale Riverwalk proposal, but Rugby presents the City with a significant, "built-in" marketing strategy that will reach millions of people around the world. One of the keys to the success of Infinity Park has been the investment in state-of-the-art broadcast technology that allows the City to stream/televise rugby matches worldwide. No other municipal facility exists today that has the technical capability and experienced in-house staff to broadcast events around the globe. Currently, Infinity Park's broadcast capabilities are "plug and play," enabling up to three full-sized television production trucks and multiple satellite uplink trucks to plug directly into camera ports located throughout the stadium.

Why Rugby in Glendale. CO?

Rugby is the second most popular sport in the world; it is played in 117 countries by 2.5 million registered players. In 2010, rugby was the third fastest growing team sport in the US according to a major study on sports participation conducted by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. A report by the Centre for the International Business of Sport and commissioned by MasterCard Worldwide says that in the US alone, participation in rugby has grown 350% since 2004. For the first time since 1924, Rugby will be played in the Olympics beginning in 2016.

While it is new to many North Americans, rugby has a long tradition of competitive excellence, fair play and sporting spirit that transcends the game itself. Rugby matches have attracted fans to stadiums all over the world since the late 19th century. Like soccer, a two-month-long rugby world cup is held every four years. Today millions around the world embrace the sport of rugby, and the overall socio-economic characteristics of rugby enthusiasts are distinct--they are highly educated and in the highest income bracket. In the international rugby community, the US is seen as a vast untapped market for the sport.

Why a Riverwalk in Glendale, CO?

People are drawn to water, whether it's an ocean, a lake, or a man-made canal running through an urban area. They want to stroll along it, bike across it, eat beside it, boat down it, play in it--they just want to be close to water. The success of the San Antonio River Walk proves it--5 million visitors per year and over $8 billion in economic impact annually. With its 300 days of sunshine, the metro Denver area is the ideal location for a Riverwalk development. And with its 20 acres of open space, the Glendale Riverwalk will be more than just another urban development--it combines the best of Colorado's active lifestyle with a dynamic, 24/7 entertainment district.

Glendale plans to build riverwalk for entertainment district

The city of Glendale is soliciting a second round of proposals from developers to build a riverwalk to complement its municipal rugby stadium.

The city has planned for an entertainment district, with a man-made channel and river boats, for more than a decade. For the past year-and-a-half, city officials have worked with landowners to develop strategies for the project, said Mike Gross, project representative for the Glendale Riverwalk.

Plans initially called for 1.5 million square feet of development, with 700,000 square feet of office space. But city officials scrapped plans for offices after meeting in March with developers, who cited a sluggish office market. City officials also relied on an economic feasibility study.

"We adjusted the square footages and the mixtures of uses to arrive at a plan that was more economically viable," Gross said. "We think there's enough office in Glendale to support what we're trying to accomplish."

Glendale's River Walk project aims high.

GLENDALE, Colo. -- The tiny city of Glendale, Colo. -a municipal island in the middle of Denver- is hoping to change its image from one of big box stores, hotels and strip clubs to high-end shopping, entertainment, recreation...and rugby.

Glendale is entertaining the idea of constructing an artificial channel to float boats which would be the center piece of a sprawling River Walk project, not unlike the famous River Walk in San Antonio, Texas.

The multi-use river corridor would create a regional gateway to a unique retail, specialty and commercial entertainment that would go a long way toward making Glendale a cultural hub.

Glendale, Colorado

The Glendale Colorado community is a small community. And it is the size of the city that makes it unique. Glendale is the perfect place for young professionals to live and it shows as our cities median age is only 29. Just minutes from Downtown, the Tech Center, and Cherry Creek, Glendale is the perfect location to get direct access to all three without the steep prices of actually living in them.

Glendale is a changing community. Starting with Infinity Park, which has become the centerpoint of the city and with its Rugby stadium it has become the focus of Rugby in America hosting National and International Rugby Events, as well as our hometown Glendale Raptors.

Glendale Riverwalk Development Project
A true regional amenity, this development will become the premiere entertainment destination for Denver Area residents as well as out-of-state and international tourists.
